Description:

SUBJECT: While the current stones date from 1946, a crossing at this location is believed to have existed for centuries, with the first official record of stepping stones here in 1841. The stones were removed during World War II to prevent them from being used by invading troops to cross the River Mole. Following the war, seventeen large hexagonal stone blocks were placed across the river. The crossing was officially reopened on September 11, 1946, by Prime Minister Clement Attlee, at the request of local politician and Home Secretary James Ede. The Stepping Stones are a major feature of the National Trust Box Hill site and lie on the route of the North Downs Way.
